Paul Johnson is the Sultan of Surf Guitar! Paul was the original
guitarist in the legendary group, The Bel-Airs, who in the
early 60's were the pioneers of the instrumental surf sound.
Paul Johnson's Bel-Airs were a very heavy influence on the
Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. The Bel-Airs started a whole
new musical genre that was widely imitated by other instrumental
surf artists and vocal groups. They had a huge hit in 1962
with Mr. Moto, which was the first instrumental surf guitar
tune ever recorded. The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean then
started to use that same surf guitar approach with the guitar
tone and reverb that Paul displayed with the Bel-Airs. If
that wasn't enough, Paul then became a member of the Surfaris
who recorded the smash hit, Wipe Out. When you hear Paul perform
with the Surf City Allstars, you get that original surf guitar
style in concert from the master himself, Paul Johnson, in
an energy filled, dazzling display of surf guitar that will
transport you to the sound of the early 1960's.
With the Surf City Allstars backing him up,
here are a few of the hits that Paul performs LIVE:
